Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs and Chairman of Pakistan Observer discuss strategies to unlock Pakistan's maritime sector potential, focusing on trade, port upgrades, and sustainable development.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Mr. Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, recently met with Chairman and Editor-In-Chief of Pakistan Observer, Mr. Faisal Zahid Malik, to discuss the untapped potential of Pakistan's maritime sector. Minister Sheikh highlighted the need to leverage Pakistan's 1,050-kilometer coastal line along the Arabian Sea for robust business activities and international trade. He emphasized attracting investments to transform the ports and terminals into strategic export hubs, benefiting not only Pakistan but also landlocked countries in Central Asia.

Minister Sheikh outlined his vision to revamp the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) by appointing a CEO from the private sector and upgrading major ports like Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port to meet international standards. He underscored the significance of Gwadar Port as the region's only deep seaport capable of handling mega ships, a vital asset under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

Mr. Malik commended the minister's focus on the blue economy, encompassing sustainable fisheries, maritime transport, tourism, and renewable energy. He stressed the importance of streamlining bureaucratic processes and engaging with global partners to drive growth in the maritime sector. The minister acknowledged Pakistan Observer's role in advocating for sustainable development and pledged efforts to uplift the neglected sector through clear guidelines for resource extraction and investments in green energy and tourism.

In conclusion, the meeting between Minister Sheikh and Mr. Malik signifies a shared commitment to harnessing Pakistan's maritime potential for economic growth and sustainable development, with a focus on enhancing trade opportunities, improving port infrastructure, and promoting the blue economy.
