The National Institute of Health identifies new poliovirus samples in Pakistan, urging parents to vaccinate children to combat the disease and contribute to eradication efforts.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has identified four new environmental samples containing wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Pakistan. These samples, found in Karachi and Pishin district, Balochistan province, are genetically linked to the imported YB3A cluster of WPV1. This cluster has been associated with all positive samples and two human cases reported in the country this year.

Poliovirus type 1 poses a significant threat to children under five years old, potentially leading to lifelong physical disabilities if contracted. The Ministry of Health is urging parents to ensure their children receive the polio vaccine during each immunization campaign to effectively combat the disease.

The NIH has implemented an integrated strategy in high-risk areas to contain the spread of polio. The government has reiterated its commitment to eradicating polio from the nation.

It is crucial for parents to prioritize their children's health by ensuring they receive the polio vaccine. By following the Ministry of Health's recommendations and participating in immunization campaigns, families can contribute to the collective effort to eliminate polio from Pakistan and protect future generations from this debilitating disease.
