The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government plans to purchase wheat locally and from Punjab's private sector to address the wheat shortage, supporting local farmers and ensuring price stability.

The Provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced plans to purchase 3.5 million tons of wheat from Punjab's private sector, in a bid to address the wheat shortage in the region. Additionally, KP government will directly buy three lakh tons of wheat from the province's farmers to support local agriculture. Despite producing 1.5 million tons of wheat annually, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faces a shortfall, with a requirement of around five million tons of the grain.

The KP government has set the purchase price at Rs. 3,900 per maund and the Provincial ministry of finance has secured the necessary funds for the procurement. The Federal cabinet has also taken note of the wheat import process during the caretaker setup, highlighting the importance of ensuring food security in the country. The Ministry of Food Security has been tasked with investigating the matter further to ensure transparency and accountability.
