Pakistan's Livestock Sector Thrives Amid Rising Donkey Population

The donkey population in Pakistan has been steadily increasing, reaching 5.9 million in the fiscal year 2023-24. This rise is part of a larger trend that has seen the donkey population grow from 5.5 million in 2019-2020. Alongside donkeys, there has been a noticeable increase in the populations of cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats in the country.

The livestock sector plays a vital role in Pakistan's rural economy, with over 8 million rural families engaged in livestock production. Livestock contributes significantly to the agricultural sector and GDP, with a growth rate of 3.89% in the fiscal year 2023-24. This sector serves as a primary source of income for rural families, contributing approximately 35% to 40% of their total earnings.

The gross value addition of the livestock sector has risen to Rs 5,804 billion in 2023-24. Furthermore, the sector contributes around 1.6% to the country's total exports. Recognizing the sector's potential for economic growth, food security, and poverty alleviation, the government has prioritized its development.

The strategy for livestock development focuses on private sector-led initiatives supported by policy interventions from the public sector. Regulatory measures have been put in place to enhance animal productivity through improved veterinary health services, breeding practices, assisted reproductive techniques, artificial insemination, balanced animal feeding, and disease control.

The livestock sector in Pakistan is experiencing growth and contributing significantly to the country's economy. With a focus on sustainable development and improved practices, the sector is poised to continue its positive trajectory, benefiting rural families and the nation as a whole.
