The Ababeel Force in Peshawar, established to combat smuggling, faces criticism for its ineffectiveness in curbing illegal activities. Reports of ongoing smuggling incidents and alleged misconduct raise concerns about the force's professionalism and impact on enhancing security.

The Ababeel Force, established under Peshawar Police three years ago, has not been able to achieve its intended goals. Comprising more than 80 motorcycles and 170 personnel, the force was tasked with controlling smuggling activities in the city. However, reports of smuggling incidents continue to surface daily, indicating the force's ineffectiveness. Despite covering a distance of over 200 kilometers each day, the force seldom manages to intercept smuggling attempts. This lack of success is evident as the force has not significantly impacted crime reduction or contributed to the provincial exchequer, which bears substantial monthly expenses for its operations.

Formed in 2021 with police officers from 18 districts of the province, the Ababeel Force was initially focused on combating drug trafficking. While claiming to have apprehended numerous suspects involved in drug-related crimes, the force's primary objective of curbing smuggling remains unmet. Instead, it has now been assigned the additional responsibilities of intercepting narcotics and illegal weapons, despite its previous shortcomings in its core mandate.

Instances of alleged misconduct by Ababeel personnel, including reports of heavy-handedness on the streets and officers found resting during duty hours, have further tarnished the force's reputation. These incidents raise concerns about the force's professionalism and commitment to fulfilling its duties effectively.

The Ababeel Force in Peshawar faces criticism for its inability to curb smuggling activities despite being operational for three years. With ongoing reports of smuggling incidents and limited success in intercepting illegal activities, the force's performance raises questions about its efficiency and impact on enhancing security in the region. Addressing the operational challenges and ensuring accountability within the force are crucial steps needed to improve its effectiveness and restore public trust in its capabilities.
