Opposition leader Shibli Faraz has raised concerns over a recent incident in the Senate involving PPP Senator Palwasha Khan presiding over a session in the presence of Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan Nasir. Faraz, in a letter to Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, criticized the move, stating that it undermined the respect and authority of the office.

The session, which took place on Friday, witnessed a clash between the treasury and opposition benches as the PTI criticized Senator Palwasha for taking the chair while the deputy chairman was in attendance. Senator Palwasha assumed the role after Chairman Gilani departed 40 minutes into the session.

PTI Senator Fauzia Arshad expressed disappointment at Palwasha's decision, while Palwasha defended her actions by asserting that it was within the chairman's discretion to allow her to preside over the session.

Shibli Faraz echoed the criticism, stressing the significance of maintaining the sanctity of the House. He highlighted the impropriety of Palwasha chairing the session in the presence of the deputy chairman, who holds a pivotal position in the chairman's absence.

In his communication to the Senate Chairman, Faraz referenced international parliamentary norms that view it as disrespectful for a member to chair a session when the deputy chairman is present. He contended that Palwasha's actions contravened the Senate's Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, particularly Rule 14.

While emphasizing the importance of adhering to parliamentary regulations and decorum, Faraz did not suggest any specific course of action in response to the incident.

The incident in the Senate has sparked debate and highlighted the need for clarity on parliamentary protocols. As discussions continue, it remains essential for all members to uphold the integrity and rules of the legislative body to ensure effective governance.
