The Islamabad High Court was informed that the Election Commission of Pakistan lacks the authority to interpret the law, highlighting the importance of clarity and adherence to constitutional principles in electoral processes.

The Islamabad High Court was informed on Thursday that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) does not possess the authority to interpret the law. This revelation came during a hearing presided over by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq regarding a citizen's petition concerning the allocation of reserved seats to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

The petitioner's legal representative, PTI leader Advocate Azhar Siddique, contended that Section 215 of the Election Act, 2017, which grants a political party the right to receive an electoral symbol, clashes with Articles 17 and 2 of the Constitution.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is responsible for overseeing the electoral processes in Pakistan, ensuring fair and transparent elections. The issue at hand revolves around the interpretation of laws governing the allocation of reserved seats to political parties, specifically the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

The ongoing legal proceedings highlight the importance of clarity and adherence to constitutional principles in the electoral process. It underscores the significance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all stakeholders operate within the defined legal framework.
