KATI and SEPA Collaborate to Enhance Environmental Compliance in Karachi

In a recent joint meeting at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Provincial Minister Dost Muhammad Rahimoon announced the establishment of a comprehensive help desk to assist all seven industrial associations in Karachi. The focus of the meeting was to address environmental issues and enhance compliance efforts among industries in the city.

Minister Rahimoon emphasized the government's commitment to environmental stewardship and directed the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to promptly set up the help desk. He stressed the importance of creating a business-friendly environment while intensifying efforts to reduce pollution. Additionally, he vowed zero tolerance for any harassment faced by industrialists and called for full cooperation from the business community.

KATI President Johar Ali Qandhari highlighted the progress made by industries in complying with environmental regulations but also revealed that 78% of pollution originates from government departments, indicating a need for urgent systemic changes.

Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya advocated for infrastructural improvements, including a specialized effluent treatment plant for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), extended audit periods, and legislative reforms to streamline compliance processes.

Representatives from various industrial associations echoed the call for action, citing the environmental crisis caused by poor waste management practices and urging government intervention.

SEPA's Director General Naeem Mughal reaffirmed the agency's commitment to supporting industrialists and announced plans for a dedicated help desk for industrial associations. These proactive measures aim to enhance communication between regulatory bodies and industrial stakeholders for sustainable industrial growth.

The event concluded with a comprehensive briefing by Provincial Secretary for Environment Nabeela Umar, highlighting the government's unwavering dedication to environmental conservation and industrial development.
