Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chairs meeting to establish Punjab Enforcement Regulatory Authority, aiming to combat inflation and enhance governance in Punjab.

The Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, recently chaired a crucial meeting to address the pressing issue of inflation in the province. The focus of the meeting was on the proposed Punjab Enforcement Regulatory Authority (PERA), highlighting the government's dedication to easing the burden of rising prices on the public.

During the meeting, discussions revolved around the necessary amendments to the laws and rules required for the establishment of PERA. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif urged for the swift completion of legal formalities to set up the authority and emphasized the importance of implementing a robust monitoring mechanism.

PERA, designed to function at the provincial level, will introduce District Enforcement Regulatory Boards in each district. At the Tehsil level, enforcement will be supervised by Sub-Divisional Enforcement Officers to ensure adherence to regulations. Additionally, a Hearing Officer at the Tehsil level will handle appeals and make timely decisions.

The enforcement team, consisting of 40 officials in each Tehsil, will be responsible for monitoring consumer goods prices and cracking down on profiteers. Efforts to enhance public spaces by clearing encroachments are also underway, with Tehsil Enforcement Officers tasked with the permanent removal of illegal structures. Any costs incurred during this process will be recovered from the violators.

This significant restructuring of the administrative system, the first in two centuries, aims to prioritize public interests. PERA will comprise assembly members, a Director-General, Administrative Secretary, and four independent members. District Enforcement Regulatory Boards will be led by Deputy Commissioners, with enforcement officers at the Tehsil level overseeing operations and monitoring.

Specialized training programs lasting a month will be provided to enforcement officers, and a monthly performance review system will be put in place. The meeting saw the presence of key figures such as Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Finance Secretary, Secretary I&C, and other relevant officers.

The Punjab government's initiative to establish PERA showcases a proactive approach towards addressing inflation and ensuring compliance with regulations. By implementing a comprehensive enforcement framework and emphasizing transparency and accountability, the government aims to protect consumer rights and promote fair market practices. The formation of PERA marks a significant step towards enhancing governance and serving the public interest in the province.
