Pervaiz Elahi, a prominent PTI figure, has been released from detention after facing corruption accusations and multiple arrests in Punjab. His return raises questions about the political future in the region.

Pervaiz Elahi, a key figure in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Chief Minister, has been freed from Kotlakhpat jail following a 355-day period of detention due to corruption accusations. Elahi, a close ally of Imran Khan, was taken into custody on June 1, 2023, but was later granted bail by the Lahore High Court.

During his time behind bars, Elahi faced several arrests before eventually regaining his liberty. He was alleged to have made illicit appointments in the Punjab Assembly, specifically tampering with records to secure grade 17 positions. The Lahore High Court's decision to release him on bail was linked to this particular case.

Upon his release, Elahi made his way back to Zahoor Elahi Palace from Lakhpat Jail. The Inspector General of Punjab briefed Justice Amjad Rafiq on the numerous cases lodged against Elahi, which included incidents from May 9. The Punjab Police had implicated Elahi in 20 cases related to the events of May 9, along with one case each in Attock and Gujranwala districts.

Pervaiz Elahi's release from detention marks the end of a tumultuous period for the former Chief Minister. The allegations against him have been a subject of significant public interest, and his return to freedom raises questions about the future political landscape in Punjab. As Elahi resumes his activities, the repercussions of his time in custody are likely to reverberate across the political spectrum in Pakistan.
