Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has returned to Pakistan after a significant three-day official visit to Azerbaijan. This visit was marked by his participation in the COP-29 Climate Action Summit, a crucial event that brought together world leaders to discuss pressing environmental issues. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed his arrival back in the country on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of this trip for Pakistan's climate agenda.
During his time in Azerbaijan, PM Shehbaz was warmly bid farewell by Azerbaijan’s Minister for Defence, Farid Ahmedov, at the Baku International Airport. The summit provided a platform for the Prime Minister to address the global community about the severe challenges Pakistan faces due to climate change. He emphasized the need for countries that have historically contributed to environmental pollution to honor their commitments towards climate action.
In addition to his speech at the summit, PM Shehbaz chaired a Round Table Conference on Climate Finance. Here, he called upon the participating nations to fulfill their promises regarding climate action, stressing that financial support is essential for countries like Pakistan that are grappling with the adverse effects of climate change.
Moreover, the Prime Minister took part in a high-level event hosted by Tajikistan focused on glacier preservation. He shared insights into Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to protect its glaciers and water resources, which are vital for the country’s ecosystem and the livelihoods of its people.
Throughout his visit, PM Shehbaz engaged in several bilateral meetings with key leaders, including the Prime Ministers of Denmark and the Czech Republic, as well as the President of Azerbaijan. At the COP-29 Climate Action Summit, the Prime Minister also held informal meetings with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the Presidents of the UAE, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Nepal.
