The Food Department in Rawalpindi region has started the wheat procurement scheme for growers, with the Punjab government aiming to procure up to 2 million metric tons of wheat. The policy focuses on supporting growers and ensuring transparency in Gujar Khan.

The Food Department in the Rawalpindi region has initiated the application process for wheat growers to participate in the 2024-25 procurement scheme. Starting on April 13 and concluding on April 17, growers in the area have been submitting their applications for the upcoming harvest season. The issuance of bardana (wheat bags) to the growers is set to begin on April 19, with wheat procurement activities scheduled to kick off on April 22.

Mr. Mahar Abbas Haral, Deputy Director of the Food Department in the Rawalpindi region, revealed that the Punjab government has directed the procurement of up to 2 million metric tons of wheat from the province during the current harvesting season. Emphasizing a 'grower-friendly and voluntary' approach, the government has set the minimum support price at Rs. 3,900 for 40 kg of wheat, with additional delivery charges of Rs. 30 for every 100 kg to be paid to suppliers and growers through the purchase bill.

Under the scheme, eligible growers, limited to those with up to 6 acres of land, will receive either 6 jute bags of 100 kg capacity or 12 polypropylene bags of 50 kg capacity per acre. Private purchase, transportation, and storage of wheat are allowed, provided that private buyers declare their stocks to the district administration. While government-procured wheat will primarily be stored in government godowns, private facilities can be utilized if necessary.

The government's focus on a transparent and efficient wheat procurement policy aims to support growers and ensure a smooth process for the upcoming harvest season in Gujar Khan.
