The Special Committee of the Punjab Assembly, led by Speaker Muhammad Ahmed Khan, recently approved significant reforms to enhance transparency, accountability, and inclusivity within the assembly.

The Special Committee of the Punjab Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Muhammad Ahmed Khan, recently convened to deliberate on proposed amendments to the Rules and Regulations of the Punjab Assembly 1997. The committee's primary focus was to enhance the functionality and inclusivity of the assembly proceedings.

One of the significant decisions made during the meeting was to allow members to deliver speeches in Punjabi, Saraiki, and Mewati, in addition to Urdu and English. This move aims to promote linguistic diversity and facilitate effective communication among members representing various regions of Punjab.

Moreover, the committee approved the introduction of a code of conduct for members, emphasizing the importance of ethical behavior and professionalism in parliamentary activities. Additionally, standing committees were granted the authority to initiate suo motu action on matters of public interest, enhancing their role in addressing pressing issues affecting the public.

As part of the reforms, a Public Petitions Committee was established to provide a platform for the public to voice their concerns directly to the Speaker and the Assembly. An Ethics Committee was also formed to oversee the adherence to the newly implemented Code of Conduct, ensuring accountability and integrity among members.

Speaker Muhammad Ahmed Khan underscored the vital role of parliamentary committees in upholding the principles of democracy and accountability within the legislative framework. He acknowledged Advocate Usama Khawar Ghuman for his contributions in proposing the amendments, highlighting the collaborative effort of all political parties in advancing the assembly's governance structure.

Notable members present at the meeting included Sami Ullah Khan, Ahmed Iqbal Chaudhary, Syed Akbar Nawani, Malik Aftab Ahmed Khan, Ammar Rashid Bhatti, and Junaid Afzal Sahi from the opposition, demonstrating a bipartisan commitment to the reform agenda.

The approval of these amendments signifies a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and inclusivity within the Punjab Assembly. By embracing linguistic diversity, promoting ethical standards, and empowering standing committees to address public concerns proactively, the assembly is poised to strengthen its democratic foundations and better serve the interests of the people of Punjab.
