The US State Department has called on Pakistan to uphold the fundamental human rights of its people, particularly in light of the recent criticism from a United Nations body regarding the detention of PTI founder Imran Khan. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in Geneva labeled Khan's detention as arbitrary and a violation of international law, recommending his immediate release and compensation.

US officials, including Department of State Secretary Antony Blinken, Assistant Secretary Donald Lu, and Ambassador Donald Blome, have consistently urged Pakistan to respect the rights of its citizens in line with its constitution and international obligations. The State Department emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, including freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and religion.

In response to a resolution passed by the US House of Representatives calling for an investigation into the February 8 elections, the State Department reiterated its stance on upholding human rights. While acknowledging the concerns raised by the UN body, the Department emphasized that Imran Khan's detention is an internal matter for Pakistan. The Department highlighted the significance of addressing issues related to Pakistani elections and allegations of rigging.

The US State Department's consistent calls for Pakistan to uphold human rights reflect a broader international concern regarding the treatment of individuals like Imran Khan and the need for adherence to international standards. As the dialogue continues between the US and Pakistan on these critical issues, the focus remains on promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all individuals.
