The global internal displacement crisis has surged to a record high, with 75.9 million IDPs due to conflict and disasters. Urgent action is needed to address the root causes and provide support for those affected.

Internal displacement, the forced movement of individuals within their own country, has reached a record high of 75.9 million globally by the end of 2023, as reported recently. This number marks a significant increase over the past five years. It is important to note that internally displaced people (IDPs) differ from refugees, as they do not cross international borders.

The report reveals that out of the total IDPs, 68.3 million were displaced due to conflict and violence, while 7.7 million were displaced by disasters. Sudan stands out with the highest number of IDPs, affecting 9.1 million individuals. Sub-Saharan Africa holds nearly half of all IDPs globally.

The director of the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre has expressed deep concern over the escalating levels of displacement caused by conflicts, which prevent individuals from rebuilding their lives. In 2023 alone, there were 46.9 million forced movements within countries, with significant contributions from conflicts in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Palestinian territories.

Specifically, in Gaza, the report highlights that 1.7 million Palestinians were internally displaced by the end of 2023, with a total of 3.4 million new movements. The Gaza war and the ongoing violence in Sudan were major factors leading to six million forced movements in 2023.

Disasters also played a crucial role in internal displacements, with China and Turkey experiencing a third of the 26.4 million forced movements due to severe weather events and earthquakes. The report underscores the urgent need for enhanced conflict prevention and peace-making efforts to address the lack of protection and assistance for the millions of displaced individuals.

The staggering number of internally displaced people globally highlights the pressing need for immediate action to address the root causes of conflict and disasters. It is crucial for governments, organizations, and individuals to work together to provide support and protection for those affected by internal displacement. By prioritizing conflict prevention and peace-building initiatives, we can strive towards a world where all individuals can live in safety and security within their own countries.
