Hamas approves a 3-stage truce plan for Gaza conflict, including Israeli troop withdrawal and UN allegations of genocide by Israel.

A cease-fire proposal approved by Hamas, brokered by Qatar and Egypt, outlines a 3-stage truce plan for the conflict in Gaza. The first stage, lasting 40 days, involves a temporary halt to military operations and Israeli troop withdrawal to eastern Gaza, excluding the Wadi Gaza area. Following the release of Israeli women held by Hamas, the Israeli army will further withdraw to facilitate humanitarian aid access and the return of displaced individuals to their homes. This initial phase also includes restrictions on Israeli military flights during specified hours.

The subsequent stages of the proposed truce extend for 42 days each, with Hamas signaling acceptance of the plan. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh confirmed the group's approval in discussions with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel. However, Israel has expressed dissatisfaction with the terms, citing unmet demands.

Recent escalations in violence, triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, have resulted in a significant death toll, with around 1,200 casualties reported. The toll on Palestinians in Gaza is staggering, with over 34,700 fatalities, predominantly women and children, and 78,100 injuries. The prolonged conflict has left large parts of Gaza in ruins, forcing 85% of the population into internal displacement amidst severe resource shortages.

Amidst these dire circumstances, the United Nations has raised allegations of genocide by Israel in Gaza. A preliminary ruling in January deemed it 'plausible' that Israel is engaged in genocidal acts, urging Tel Aviv to cease such actions and ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza.
