A 6.4 earthquake hits southern Japan with no casualties reported. Government swiftly responds to assess damage and coordinate disaster relief efforts.

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Japan on Wednesday, causing concern but fortunately resulting in no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage to infrastructure. The quake's epicenter was located off the coast of Ehime Prefecture, with a depth of 50 kilometers. The tremor, which occurred at 11:14 p.m., registered a lower 6 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7 in the affected prefectures.

The focus of the earthquake was identified in a strait that separates the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Despite the seismic activity, the Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime reported no abnormalities, with its No. 3 unit continuing to operate as usual.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that the government is currently assessing the situation and gathering data on any potential damage caused by the earthquake. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has urged authorities to mobilize all available resources and work closely with local governments to ensure effective disaster relief operations.

The earthquake in southern Japan serves as a reminder of the country's vulnerability to seismic activity. While initial reports indicate no significant harm, the government's swift response and coordination with local authorities highlight Japan's preparedness in handling such natural disasters.
