Two Japanese climbers faced tragedy on Spantik mountain in Pakistan. One climber found lifeless, search ongoing for the other. Recovery mission supported by Pakistan Army helicopters.

Two Japanese climbers, Ryuseki Hiraoka and Atsushi Taguchi, embarked on a challenging expedition to summit the 7,027-metre Spantik mountain in northern Pakistan. Unfortunately, during their ascent, Hiraoka went missing and was later discovered lifeless 300 metres below Camp 3. The search continues for Taguchi, the second climber.

The climbers began their journey on June 3, starting from base camp without the aid of porters. Their last sighting was on June 10, prompting concerns from fellow climbers who raised the alarm the following day. Despite a military helicopter spotting the climbers, adverse weather conditions forced a temporary halt to the search efforts.

The recovery mission, supported by Pakistan Army helicopters, involves skilled high-altitude climbers and experts. Camp 3, where Hiraoka's body was recovered, is positioned at approximately 6,200 metres above sea level. This tragic incident underscores the inherent dangers of high-altitude mountaineering.

As the search for Atsushi Taguchi continues, the mountaineering community mourns the loss of Ryuseki Hiraoka. This somber event serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable challenges that climbers face in pursuit of their goals. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the climbers during this difficult time.
