The PLA conducts military exercises near Taiwan amidst a political dispute, raising concerns about potential conflict.
In response to President William Lai Ching-te's concerns over China's aggressive actions, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has launched joint military exercises near Taiwan. These exercises come in the wake of a proposed amendment that has sparked a political dispute in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan.
The PLA's Eastern Theater Command has initiated a two-day military drill named 'Joint Sword-2024A exercises,' which includes areas like the Taiwan Strait, Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqi, Dongyin, and surrounding regions. Analysts believe that the exercise is a simulation of a potential armed invasion of Taiwan, given the nomenclature and the inclusion of outlying Taiwanese islands.
Recent reports indicate a significant presence of 16 PLA warships, 19 Chinese coast guard vessels, and 49 warplanes in close proximity to Taiwan. Huang Wen-chi, deputy chief of the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense’s Office of the General Staff for Intelligence, confirmed these details on Thursday evening.
The escalating tensions between Taiwan and China have raised concerns about the potential for military conflict in the region. It is crucial for both sides to engage in dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
