Eneos Holdings and Mitsubishi Corp are expanding their collaboration beyond sustainable aviation fuel to include hydrogen and decarbonized fuels, aiming to establish global supply chains for eco-friendly fuels and advance synthetic fuels derived from CO2-free hydrogen.

Japan's Eneos Holdings, a prominent oil refiner, and Mitsubishi Corp, a leading trading giant, have recently unveiled plans to broaden their collaboration beyond sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to encompass hydrogen and decarbonized fuels. This strategic move aligns with the overarching goal of Japanese energy companies to establish global supply chains for eco-friendly fuels, supporting the worldwide transition towards cleaner energy sources to combat climate change.

In the year 2022, Eneos and Mitsubishi embarked on a joint feasibility study to commercialize SAF, a fuel that can be produced synthetically from hydrogen or bio-based materials such as used cooking oil or wood chips. Building upon this successful initiative, the two companies are now looking to strengthen their partnership by delving into hydrogen supply chains utilizing methylcyclohexane (MCH) for hydrogen storage and transportation. Furthermore, they aim to create carbon dioxide (CO2)-free hydrogen supply networks on an international scale and promote the utilization of hydrogen in the mobility sector.

This collaboration will capitalize on Eneos' existing infrastructure, which includes hydrogen stations for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and refineries, in conjunction with Mitsubishi's expertise in establishing global fuel supply networks. Additionally, the companies will collaborate on advancing synthetic fuels derived from CO2-free hydrogen, thereby playing a significant role in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

The partnership between Eneos Holdings and Mitsubishi Corp marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future, where eco-friendly fuels and hydrogen technologies play a crucial role in combating climate change. By leveraging their respective strengths and expertise, these companies are poised to make a meaningful impact on the global energy landscape, driving innovation and progress towards a cleaner, greener world.
