Sindh Government Boosts Fisheries Sector for Economic Growth

The government of Sindh is actively working to improve the fisheries sector in the province to increase exports. Challenges such as high production costs and restrictions on fisheries exports to European countries have led to these efforts.

Efforts are underway to involve stakeholders in addressing the ban on fish imports from Pakistan by the European Union. Plans are also being developed to regulate fishing activities during specific months to support fish populations, with financial aid allocated for affected fishermen.

The government is prioritizing the enhancement of harbor operations and collaborating with relevant parties to effectively implement a comprehensive master plan.

Fishing is a crucial economic activity along Sindh's extensive coastline, which holds a significant portion of Pakistan's fisheries resources. The region's coastal waters provide ideal conditions for fisheries production due to optimal salinity and temperature levels.

Pakistan boasts a diverse range of fisheries resources, including 150 commercially important species. Key export species comprise shrimp, Indian mackerel, ribbon-fish, tuna, sole, and crab.

Despite abundant resources, challenges such as mismanagement, overexploitation, environmental degradation, and inadequate infrastructure hinder the growth of the fisheries sector. Sustainable practices, increased production, improved infrastructure, and better socioeconomic conditions for fishing communities are essential for the sector's development.
