The rise in cat bite cases in Kashmir underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper care practices to prevent the spread of rabies and zoonotic diseases.

In the past year, the anti-rabies clinic at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar has seen a significant increase in cat bite cases, with a total of 2,824 reported incidents. This is part of a larger trend, as the clinic documented a total of 8,652 bite cases from April 2023 to March 2024, including bites from dogs, cats, and other animals.

Dr. Mohammad Salim Khan, a specialist from GMC Srinagar, has pointed out the rising number of cat bites, linking it to the rising popularity of cats as pets. He stressed the importance of pet owners ensuring their pets are vaccinated, dewormed, and receive timely treatment to prevent the spread of rabies.

With the increasing trend of pet ownership in Kashmir over the past decade, officials are urging pet owners to maintain good hygiene practices when interacting with their pets to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases. They also emphasize the responsibilities that come with owning a pet, including meeting their behavioral needs and providing proper care.

Looking at the data from 2015 to 2024, there has been a gradual increase in bite cases, with around 58,000 cases registered at the Anti-Rabies Clinic. Rabies remains a serious concern globally, causing approximately 59,000 human deaths each year, with a majority of cases occurring in Africa and Asia.

The rise in cat bite cases in Kashmir highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper pet care practices. By following guidelines for vaccination, deworming, and timely treatment, pet owners can help prevent the transmission of rabies and other diseases. It is crucial for individuals to understand the risks associated with pet ownership and take necessary precautions to ensure the well-being of both pets and humans.
