The Islamabad Food Authority cracks down on farmers using contaminated water for irrigation, emphasizing food safety regulations for public health protection.

The Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) recently took action against farmers in the G-12 area for growing mint using wastewater for irrigation. During a raid, the IFA found mint being cultivated on one kanal of land using contaminated water, which poses serious health risks to consumers.

Following the discovery, the IFA, in collaboration with food safety teams, inspected a total of 10 kanal land and destroyed the contaminated mint. Dr. Tahira Saddique, Deputy Director Operations of IFA, stressed that the use of wastewater for irrigation is a violation of food safety regulations.

Dr. Saddique warned the farmers against using contaminated water for growing vegetables intended for sale in the market. She explained the dangers of consuming crops irrigated with contaminated water and advised that only non-edible crops should be cultivated using such water.

The IFA remains dedicated to ensuring a safe food supply by actively monitoring and enforcing food safety standards in the agricultural sector. By upholding these standards, the IFA aims to provide the public with high-quality and nutritious food options.

It is crucial for farmers to adhere to food safety regulations to protect consumers from potential health hazards. The IFA's swift action in addressing the use of contaminated water for irrigation underscores the importance of maintaining strict standards in food production. By promoting safe agricultural practices, the IFA is working towards safeguarding public health and well-being.
