The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is considering raising fares for the Peshawar BRT system to address annual losses of Rs3 billion. Proposed adjustments aim to ensure financial sustainability and efficient public transportation services.

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is considering raising the fares for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to address its annual losses of Rs3 billion. Currently facing a significant deficit, the provincial government is looking to increase fares by Rs5 to Rs10 to cover operational costs. Reports suggest that this move aims to reduce the burden on the provincial budget, which currently provides a subsidy of the same amount to sustain the BRT system.

A recent meeting, presided over by KP Finance Advisor, discussed the potential fare adjustments as a means to manage expenses and boost revenue. The final decision regarding fare revisions will be made by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) board, highlighting the importance of financial sustainability for the Peshawar BRT.

In addition to fare hikes, the meeting proposed the introduction of a daily unlimited travel pass priced at Rs150 for the general public and Rs100 for specific groups like women, students, transgender individuals, and senior citizens. Moreover, a nominal fee of one rupee per passenger will be allocated towards KPUMA's operational expenditures, ensuring the continued smooth operation of the BRT system.

Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam confirmed the government's intention to increase fares, emphasizing the role of the KPUMA board in making this crucial decision. With approximately 80 million riders utilizing the Peshawar BRT last year and a total ridership of 215 million since 2020, the fare adjustments aim to strike a balance between financial sustainability and providing efficient public transportation services to the residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
