Lt Gen Umar Ahmad Bukhari takes charge in KP

Since August 30, 2024, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has faced significant security challenges following the withdrawal of global powers and their allies. Various terrorist groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban and insurgents in Balochistan have posed threats to the region. Moreover, surrendered militants have reemerged, engaging in criminal activities across KP, with some local elements supporting these groups.

On May 16, 2024, a Change of Command ceremony at 11 Corps Headquarters marked the transition from Lt Gen Sardar Azhar Hayat to Lt Gen Umar Ahmad Bukhari as the new Corps Commander. Lt Gen Bukhari, with a distinguished military background, faces a complex political landscape in KP, marked by tensions between key stakeholders and disputes over financial allocations.

Expectations are high for the new Corps Commander to bridge political divides, enhance cooperation between the KP and Federal Governments, counter anti-military sentiments, address grievances in Merged Districts, conduct intelligence-based operations, strengthen the police force, and engage with the community to tackle security challenges.

The Constitution of Pakistan allows for military assistance to the civilian government when necessary. It is imperative for leaders at all levels to work together with security agencies to combat security threats and restore peace and prosperity to KP and Pakistan as a whole.

The appointment of Lt Gen Umar Ahmad Bukhari as the new Corps Commander in KP comes at a critical juncture, with the region facing complex security issues.
