Pakistan takes a significant step towards protecting its glacial water resources with the launch of the GLOF III project. Collaboration between NDMA and the Ministry of Climate Change aims to combat climate challenges and prepare for the COP29 summit in Baku.

Pakistan has taken a significant step towards protecting its glacial water resources with the launch of the GLOF III project. The project, spearheaded by PM's Coordinator on Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam, aims to mitigate the risks posed by glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the region. In a recent meeting between Romina Khurshid Alam and Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, it was agreed that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Climate Change would join forces to address climate-related challenges.

The collaboration between NDMA and the Ministry of Climate Change underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to combat heat waves, natural disasters, and potential floods in Pakistan. Both parties have recognized the importance of developing a unified strategy to safeguard wildlife species that are particularly vulnerable during flood events.

Moreover, discussions were held regarding Pakistan's participation in the upcoming COP29 summit. A mutual agreement was reached to collaborate closely on preparing reports, documentaries, and recommendations for the UN global summit scheduled to take place in Baku later this year. PM's Coordinator Romina Khurshid Alam assured COP29 President and Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology & Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, of Pakistan's full cooperation and technical support for the event.

Chairman NDMA proposed the establishment of a joint project bank with the Ministry of Climate Change to facilitate sustainable development projects and streamline efforts in the country. This proposal was met with endorsement, highlighting the commitment of both agencies to promoting environmental sustainability and resilience.

The launch of the GLOF III project and the collaborative initiatives between NDMA and the Ministry of Climate Change mark a significant milestone in Pakistan's efforts to address climate change and protect its natural resources. By working together on key environmental challenges and participating actively in global climate summits like COP29, Pakistan is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
