Punjab farmers face challenges as government delays wheat procurement, leading to legal battles and protests.

Punjab farmers have taken their grievances to the Lahore High Court as they face challenges in selling their wheat produce to the provincial government. The issue arose when the Punjab government failed to initiate the purchase of wheat from farmers at the official price of Rs 3,900 per maund, as previously announced. Despite the scheduled start date of April 22 for wheat procurement, no progress has been made, leaving farmers at the mercy of fluctuating market prices exacerbated by recent rains.

The petition filed by Farhat Manzoor Chandio highlights the government's obligation to support farmers by purchasing their wheat at the agreed-upon rate. The petitioner urges the court to compel the government to fulfill its commitment and combat any exploitative practices by intervening against vested interests.

While the Punjab government remains indecisive on the matter, farmer representatives, including Sultan Javed, emphasize the urgency of resolving the situation to safeguard farmers' livelihoods. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's intervention to increase the wheat procurement target to 1.8 million metric tons is seen as a positive step towards alleviating the farmers' plight and ensuring a stable income for them.

However, tensions escalated as Punjab police cracked down on farmer leaders staging protests, leading to arrests and disruptions in various regions. The farmers' distress over the delay in official wheat procurement has forced many to sell their produce below the stipulated price, further exacerbating their financial strain.

The standoff between Punjab farmers and the government underscores the critical need for timely and transparent agricultural policies to protect the interests of farmers. As legal battles and protests continue, the resolution of the wheat procurement crisis remains pivotal in securing the livelihoods of thousands of farmers across the province.
