Forest fires have become a pressing issue in Punjab, with a significant number of incidents occurring between May 2024 and mid-June. Over the last four years, more than 9,233 acres of land have been destroyed by 326 fire outbreaks in the region. The impact is particularly severe in hill stations like Murree, Rawalpindi, and plateau areas such as Lahore and Kasur.
These fires are often the result of human negligence, like discarded cigarettes or irresponsible behavior during outdoor activities. The hot summer temperatures make the forests highly susceptible to fires, where even small sparks or lightning strikes can lead to substantial damage. Crown fires at the tree tops and ground fires from leaves on the forest floor pose significant threats to wildlife and vegetation.
To combat this issue, it is recommended that the government involve local communities in collecting dried leaves and bark from pine trees to create fuel. This initiative not only provides employment opportunities but also aids in forest maintenance. In hilly regions where establishing buffer zones is challenging, the risk of fires is heightened due to the flammable nature of pine tree components.
One critical concern raised is the lack of training and firefighting equipment among Forest Department personnel. To address this gap, proper training, uniforms, and firefighting tools like fire rakes and water bowsers should be provided. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has committed to supporting forest fire fighters by supplying necessary equipment.
Forest fires in Punjab pose a serious threat to the environment, wildlife, and communities.
