The Roads General Authority implements cool pavements near Namirah Mosque in Arafat to combat high temperatures, enhance comfort for worshippers, and promote sustainable urban development.

An initiative to combat the 'Urban heat island effect' by cooling asphalt surfaces has been extended to the vicinity of the Namirah Mosque in Arafat. The Roads General Authority has taken the initiative to cover an area of 25,000 square meters around the mosque with a special cool pavement material that absorbs less solar radiation. This move comes as a response to the high temperatures experienced in the region, with traditional road materials absorbing heat during the day, leading to temperatures as high as 70°C. The release of this absorbed heat at night exacerbates the Urban heat island effect, resulting in increased energy consumption and air pollution.

The Roads General Authority is introducing 'cool pavements' made from locally sourced materials that are designed to reflect solar radiation and lower surface temperatures. By implementing these innovative materials around the Namirah Mosque, the second largest mosque in the Makkah region after the Grand Mosque, the aim is to create a more comfortable environment for worshippers, especially during the second day of Hajj when many pilgrims gather for prayers.

The initiative to cool asphalt surfaces around the Namirah Mosque in Arafat is a significant step towards mitigating the Urban heat island effect and improving the overall environment for worshippers and residents in the area. By utilizing cool pavements that reduce surface temperatures, the Roads General Authority is not only enhancing the comfort of individuals but also contributing to energy efficiency and reduced air pollution. This proactive approach to sustainable urban development sets a positive example for other regions facing similar challenges.
