Commissioner Khattak leads plastic ban initiative in Rawalpindi Division

In a recent development, Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, Engineer Aamir Khattak, has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation by emphasizing the importance of implementing a ban on plastic bags. The initiative aims to involve all relevant parties in the process to ensure its effectiveness.

Commissioner Khattak has instructed officials to conduct awareness sessions with stakeholders, including manufacturers, recyclers, and consumers, before the ban comes into effect. These sessions will educate participants on the necessity of complying with the new regulations and provide them with information on alternative materials to single-use plastics.

To further engage the community, educational sessions will be organized to raise awareness about the harmful impacts of plastic bag usage and explore sustainable alternatives. Suggestions put forward by Commissioner Khattak include using cloth bags as a substitute for plastic bags and promoting the use of paper, steel, or wooden cutlery. He also highlighted the potential economic opportunities that could arise from local production of these eco-friendly alternatives.

The primary objective of this initiative is to protect the environment and human health. The enforcement of the Punjab Environmental Protection Regulations 2023, which prohibit the production and consumption of single-use plastic products, is a key focus for the administration. To ensure compliance, price magistrates in the district will be equipped with tools to measure the thickness of plastic bags, with those below 75 microns facing confiscation starting from June 5.
