The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, is deliberating on media freedom issues, emphasizing the importance of a free press and upholding democratic values in Pakistan.

The Supreme Court is currently deliberating on contempt cases involving Senator Faisal Vawda and MNA Mustafa Kamal for their remarks against the judiciary, which has put the media in the spotlight. Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, along with a three-judge bench, has issued contempt notices to 34 TV channels for airing press conferences deemed contemptuous by the two lawmakers. During the proceedings, CJP Isa expressed concerns about the TV channels broadcasting these press conferences. Both the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) echoed CJP Isa's worries about media coverage.

Earlier, CJP Isa criticized TV channels for airing one-sided allegations of election rigging without presenting the opposing viewpoint. He emphasized the issue of biased reporting and highlighted the dangers of misinformation spreading online. Despite facing malicious campaigns on social media, Justice Isa refrained from retaliation. However, his comments on media conduct may impact freedom of speech.

Before becoming Chief Justice, Justice Qazi Faez Isa strongly advocated for media independence. He emphasized the importance of a free press in upholding democracy and holding authorities accountable. Justice Isa stressed that violating fundamental rights is a breach of the Constitution and that press freedom is a fundamental right in Pakistan.

Justice Isa has consistently raised concerns about the harassment of media personnel and the need to protect freedom of speech. He has questioned actions by state institutions that restrict free speech and has emphasized the vital role of a free press in exposing injustice and corruption. Despite some recent challenges to press freedom, Justice Isa continues to advocate for a robust and independent media.

As the government considers stricter regulations on media, all eyes are on the judiciary, led by CJP Isa, to safeguard freedom of speech and uphold democratic principles.

The ongoing deliberation by the Supreme Court under the leadership of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa highlights the critical importance of media freedom in Pakistan. Justice Isa's unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values and protecting freedom of speech serves as a beacon for ensuring a vibrant and independent media landscape in the country.
