Former Prime Minister Imran Khan's detention declared arbitrary by UN, sparking international debate on legal complexities and political motivations.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been in custody since last August. Recently, a UN group declared his detention as arbitrary, leading to a call from the UN Secretary-General for an enhancement in Khan's situation.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) recommended Khan's release without conditions, stating that his detention violated international law. Despite some overturned convictions, Khan remains detained due to a specific case.

Imran Khan's party believes the charges against him were politically motivated to impede his political return. The UN chief's spokesperson stressed the importance of a positive change in Khan's political circumstances, in line with an independent panel's suggestion.

In response to the UN report, Pakistan's Law Minister asserted that Khan's legal status is governed by the country's laws. Khan faces various charges, including corruption and terrorism allegations, post his removal as prime minister.

The situation surrounding Imran Khan's detention continues to draw international attention. With the UN advocating for his release and ongoing legal complexities, the future remains uncertain for the former prime minister.
