Former Caretaker Minister Murtaza Solangi emphasizes the urgency of raising taxes on tobacco products in Pakistan to protect youth health and boost the economy. Proposed tax increase receives positive feedback for its potential impact on public health and revenue generation.

Former Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Murtaza Solangi, stressed the urgent need to increase taxes on tobacco products in Pakistan to protect the youth and the economy. This call to action was made during an event organized by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) to commemorate World No Tobacco Day 2024, focusing on amplifying youth voices against the tobacco industry.

Mr. Solangi shed light on the concerning impact of tobacco consumption on Pakistan's youth, especially considering the country's significant young population. He raised alarm over the tobacco industry taking advantage of the lack of stringent control measures, putting the health and future of the youth at risk. He cautioned against the dangers of tobacco and nicotine addiction leading to other substance abuse and severe health complications among young individuals.

With Pakistan having more than 31.9 million adult tobacco users, constituting nearly 19.7% of the adult population, smoking-related diseases claim over 160,000 lives each year. International bodies like the World Health Organization and the World Bank have consistently advised Pakistan to strengthen its tobacco taxation policies to address this pressing issue.

Malik Imran Ahmad, the Country Head of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), commended the proposed 26.6% Federal Excise Duty (FED) increase for the fiscal year 2024-25 as a significant move. This measure not only aims to offset healthcare expenses but also intends to discourage hundreds of thousands of individuals from smoking. The expected rise in revenue could further bolster public health programs and fortify the national economy.

Enhancing taxes on tobacco products in Pakistan is crucial for safeguarding the well-being of the youth and strengthening the economy. By implementing effective taxation policies and raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco, the country can take a significant step towards creating a healthier and more prosperous future for its citizens.
