Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf strongly opposes proposed constitutional amendments on judges' appointment, citing concerns about weakening institutions. Federal Law Minister suggests extending Chief Justice's term, sparking a debate on judicial appointments and judges' tenure in Pakistan.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has strongly opposed the proposed constitutional amendments regarding the appointment of judges. A PTI spokesperson criticized the amendments, stating that they are part of a trend of weakening institutions in the country. The spokesperson accused the current government of making decisions over the past two years that have undermined institutions and are driven by an unconstitutional agenda.

The Prime Minister has reportedly instructed the Federal Law Minister to pursue constitutional amendments related to the appointment of judges. In response, the PTI spokesperson declared that the party will vehemently oppose these amendments through legal and democratic means, including blocking them in parliament.

During a recent interview on a news program, Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar suggested extending the term of service for the Chief Justice to three years or raising the retirement age of Supreme Court judges beyond 65. He highlighted concerns about judges continuing to serve even at the age of 68. While the Law Minister acknowledged that he has not received official instructions to work on these proposals, he did not dismiss the possibility of addressing the issue in the future.

In conclusion, the opposition from PTI to the proposed constitutional amendments for the appointment of judges reflects broader concerns about the state of institutions in Pakistan. The debate over judicial appointments and the tenure of judges is likely to continue as different political parties and stakeholders express their views on the matter.
