Kenya mourns the tragic loss of Army Chief Ogolla in a helicopter accident. Military tribute, investigation, and global condolences mark the solemn event.

Kenya honored its late army chief, Francis Omondi Ogolla, who tragically passed away in a helicopter accident this week. The military tribute included a 19-gun cannon salute and a religious ceremony held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi. President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and opposition leader Raila Odinga were among the dignitaries present.

Ogolla, a highly respected military officer, lost his life at the age of 62 when the helicopter he was traveling in crashed in a remote area in northwestern Kenya. The incident, which also claimed the lives of nine other military officials, occurred during a visit to troops deployed in a security operation.

The tragic event marked the fifth helicopter crash involving the Kenyan military in the past year, raising concerns about the age and maintenance of the aircraft. The Kenya Air Force has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Ogolla, who had a distinguished career in the Kenya Defence Forces, served as the country's air force commander from 2018 to 2021 before being appointed as the Chief of Defence Forces. His funeral is scheduled to take place in Siaya, followed by a memorial service in Nairobi.

The untimely death of General Ogolla has prompted an outpouring of condolences from within Kenya, across Africa, and from international organizations and allies. His legacy as a dedicated military leader and patriot will be remembered by many.
