Military halts recovery efforts in Papua New Guinea landslide tragedy due to hazardous conditions. Only nine bodies recovered out of estimated 650 affected individuals. Discussions ongoing for a potential memorial to honor victims.

Following a recent landslide in Papua New Guinea, the military has made the difficult decision to halt recovery efforts for the hundreds of villagers feared buried. The hazardous conditions of the disaster zone, including the risk of further landslides, have led to the declaration of a 'no-go zone' in the highland area. Major Joe Aku, overseeing the site, emphasized the extreme danger, prompting the suspension of recovery operations.

Papua New Guinea, a country prone to natural disasters, often experiences landslides in its highlands. The May 24 landslide initially raised concerns for up to 2,000 individuals, but the actual number affected is estimated to be around 650. Despite ongoing efforts, only nine bodies have been recovered to date.

An internal report from the mining and geohazards department has highlighted the persistent risk of additional landslides at the site, recommending restricted access for experts only. With approximately 7,849 residents in the affected wards, many have been evacuated and rely on aid for survival.

Discussions are in progress regarding a potential memorial to honor those who lost their lives in this tragic event. As the community copes with the aftermath, support and assistance continue to be crucial for those impacted by the landslide.
