QatarEnergy to Construct Salt Production Facility in Um Al Houl

QatarEnergy has announced its plans to construct a state-of-the-art salt production facility in collaboration with Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC) and Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Co. (QIMC) in the Um Al Houl region of Qatar. This initiative is part of QatarEnergy's TAWTEEN program, which aims to boost the country's self-sufficiency by producing industrial and table salts for both local consumption and export.

The facility, with an estimated cost of QR1 billion, will not only produce salts but also manufacture bromine, potassium chloride, and demineralized water to support product diversification and economic growth in the region.

Endorsed by H E Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, this project marks a significant milestone in promoting industrial localization and sustainable practices in Qatar's energy sector. By utilizing reject water recovery from desalination units, the plant will play a crucial role in transforming waste into a valuable resource, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and economic resilience.

With an annual production capacity of one million tons, the facility is expected to reduce Qatar's dependence on imported raw materials, particularly the 850,000 tons of salts it currently imports each year.

Aligned with the objectives of the TAWTEEN program, this project exemplifies a strong public-private partnership aimed at achieving strategic national goals. As part of this collaboration, 78 investment opportunities have been allocated, with a target of 100 opportunities to enhance local services and industries within Qatar's energy sector.

Since its inception in 2019, the TAWTEEN program has already created 7,000 white-collar jobs, highlighting its significant impact on job creation and economic development in the country.

The construction of the salt production facility in the Um Al Houl region represents a major step towards enhancing Qatar's self-sufficiency and promoting sustainable practices in the energy sector. Through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships, QatarEnergy is driving economic growth and job creation while reducing the country's reliance on imported raw materials.
