SAU and UBL collaborate to address seed shortage in Sindh by developing high-quality, resilient seeds to combat crop losses and empower farmers.

The Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) and the United Bank Limited (UBL) have joined forces to tackle the shortage of certified cotton seeds in Sindh through a new project. The initiative aims to provide farmers with high-quality seeds to combat the significant crop losses caused by the use of substandard seeds. Dr. Inayatullah Rajper, a prominent figure at SAU, emphasized the critical need for certified seeds, particularly in light of the adverse effects of floods on cotton crops in the region.

Private companies supplying substandard seeds have been identified as a major contributor to crop losses in the cotton sector. To address this issue, SAU and UBL are channeling their research efforts into developing resilient cotton and wheat seeds that can withstand various environmental challenges. The collaboration between UBL and SAU has already shown promising results in enhancing seed quality, as noted by key individuals involved in the project.

As part of the project, SAU is gearing up to introduce two new varieties of cotton seeds to farmers in the near future. This move is expected to not only improve the overall seed quality available to farmers but also boost crop yields and resilience against common threats.

The project's significance was underscored by the presence of the SPDC Director, who highlighted the potential of research in producing disease-resistant seeds. The event, attended by the Project Convener and other key individuals, marked a crucial step towards addressing the seed shortage issue in Sindh and empowering farmers with the tools they need to safeguard their crops.
