18-year-old dies from Congo virus in Peshawar

Congo virus, also known as Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), has claimed the life of an 18-year-old individual in Peshawar, Pakistan. The National Health Institute confirmed the diagnosis, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The patient, who had recently traveled to Punjab for animal purchase, exhibited symptoms such as high fever, body aches, and vomiting. Prompt testing at Khyber Teaching Hospital revealed the presence of the virus, leading to immediate action.

In response to recent deaths in Attock district, authorities have taken strict measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Section 144 has been enforced, prohibiting cattle markets and inter-provincial/district animal transfers until May 30. Contact tracing efforts are in progress to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus, ensuring timely intervention.

CCHF, caused by the tick-borne Nairovirus, poses a significant risk to human health. The virus can be transmitted through tick bites or contact with infected animals' blood or tissues.
