CAA Implements Runway Closure for Flight Safety Measures

Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore will be closing both runways for three hours daily from July 10 to September 10, as announced by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This temporary closure is a precautionary measure taken during the monsoon season to enhance flight safety and reduce the risk of bird strikes, which are more common during this time of the year.

The CAA has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to inform domestic and international airlines about the closure. Emergency landing facilities will be available if needed. The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has also updated its Wildlife Hazard Management Plan, revealing that 61 aircraft, including both local and foreign airlines, were affected by bird strikes last year.

Recent data shows that the national carrier, PIA, suffered significant financial losses due to bird strikes, with 39 incidents reported at domestic airports across Pakistan in the past six months. The decision to temporarily shut down the runways at Allama Iqbal International Airport aims to address these risks and prioritize the safety of passengers and aircraft during the monsoon season.
