Chitral authorities swiftly respond to recent floods

Recent heavy rains and floods have wreaked havoc in Chitral, leading to the closure of several key roads and causing immense difficulties for the local population. The incessant downpour resulted in floods in rivers and canals, bringing down large stones and debris from the mountains, obstructing vital transportation routes.

Areas such as Orghoch, Bakamak, Shadok, Dinian Gahtak, and others have been severely affected, with thousands of people stranded due to road closures. Villages near Ghoch are particularly hard hit, with a valley housing fifteen thousand residents cut off from both sides.

The main Chitral road saw a bridge to Orghoch blocked, while the Faizabad route faced obstacles from falling rocks and trees. Landslides and fallen electricity poles further exacerbated the situation, leading to power outages in various areas for over a week.

Efforts to restore connectivity have been swift, with the Deputy Commissioner Chitral and the C&W Department working to reopen roads such as Abdul Wali Khan Bypass Road, Dunin Chidok, Officer Mess Road, and others. Despite these efforts, challenges persist as heavy rains and landslides continue to pose threats to road safety.

The closure of vital routes has forced locals to undertake arduous journeys on foot, carrying essential supplies and transporting patients to medical facilities. The resilience of the community, coupled with the prompt response from authorities, highlights the urgent need for sustained efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the region.
