Healthcare Workers at Sahiwal Teaching Hospital Demand Justice

Desperation and a lack of viable alternatives have led healthcare workers at Sahiwal Teaching Hospital (STH) to resort to strikes. The recent crisis at STH was triggered by a fire in the paediatric ward due to a malfunctioning air-conditioning system. This incident led to administrative actions, including the suspension of Dr Umer Farooq and the transfer of Medical Superintendent Dr Akhter Mahboob.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's visit to the hospital further escalated the situation when she ordered the verbal termination and arrest of senior officials, resulting in a police assault on doctors. Subsequently, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) called for a strike, supported by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) local chapter, which halted services at STH and across Punjab.
