The Islamabad High Court is hearing appeals by Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi regarding their conviction in a case related to the misuse of a classified cypher document. The court emphasizes the importance of a fair trial and upholding legal standards in criminal cases.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) is currently hearing appeals filed by former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi regarding their conviction in a case related to the misuse of a diplomatic telegram during the final days of the PTI government. The case, which resulted in both PTI leaders being sentenced to ten years in prison by a special court, revolves around a grade-two classified cypher document allegedly displayed by Imran Khan at a public rally in Islamabad in March 2022.

During the recent court proceedings, the prosecutor for the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) clarified that every coded communication is considered classified by law. However, it was noted that the content of the cypher document was not disclosed by any prosecution witnesses during the trial court hearing. The court raised questions about how Imran and Qureshi violated the law and whether they were adequately informed about the sensitive nature of the document by government officials.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb highlighted that in criminal cases, the benefit of the doubt is given to the accused, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a fair trial for Imran and Qureshi. The court adjourned the hearing until today (Tuesday) to further examine the details of the case.

The ongoing proceedings at the Islamabad High Court underscore the significance of upholding legal standards and providing a fair trial to individuals accused of criminal offenses. The focus on clarifying the circumstances surrounding the alleged misuse of a classified cypher document highlights the complexities involved in such cases and the need for thorough examination of evidence to ensure justice is served.
