The Ministry of National Health Services in Pakistan is spearheading the development of the Pakistan National Healthy Diets Policy to combat malnutrition and promote healthy eating habits. Through collaboration with stakeholders, the policy aims to improve food quality, especially for children, and address the country's health and nutrition challenges.

The Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination has taken a significant step towards improving the health and nutrition landscape in Pakistan by initiating the formulation of the Pakistan National Healthy Diets Policy (PNHDP). This policy aims to address the diverse dietary and health needs of the population, with a focus on combating malnutrition and promoting healthy eating habits.

In a recent consultative session held in Quetta, key stakeholders from federal and Balochistan government departments, academia, research institutions, development partners, and nutrition entities came together to shape the policy framework. With support from the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the collaborative effort emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive policy to meet the urgent needs of vulnerable populations in Balochistan.

The session saw active participation from Balochistan Minister for Health, who stressed the significance of collaboration in tackling malnutrition and poor dietary practices. The commitment of the provincial health department to improving food availability and quality, especially for children's health, was highlighted by the Secretary of the Health Department Balochistan.

GAIN's Head of Policy and Advocacy shed light on the severe malnutrition challenges in Pakistan and advocated for policy changes such as taxing unhealthy diets and promoting nutritious commodities. The engagement of stakeholders was deemed essential for an inclusive policy formulation approach, with the Federal Ministry of Health reaffirming Pakistan's dedication to healthy diets through international partnerships.

Participants delved into a detailed analysis of the pressing need for a national healthy diets policy to combat malnutrition and foster healthy eating habits. The presentation of the Policy Framework of the National Healthy Diet Policy, supported by technical insights from the International Research Force, guided stakeholders in identifying key policy areas that align with provincial contexts and support sustainable food systems across Pakistan.

The collaborative efforts in formulating the Pakistan National Healthy Diets Policy mark a significant milestone in addressing the country's health and nutrition challenges. By bringing together diverse stakeholders and emphasizing the importance of healthy eating habits, this policy initiative aims to create a positive impact on the well-being of the population, particularly vulnerable groups. With a strong focus on combating malnutrition and promoting nutritious diets, the policy framework sets the stage for a healthier future for Pakistan.
