Pakistan's PHDEC organizes webinar to educate stakeholders on managing Green Potatoes and Black Heart Disease, aiming to enhance quality standards for sustainable potato exports.

Pakistan, a major player in the global potato market, has taken proactive steps to tackle quality issues affecting its exports. With an annual production of 8 million metric tons, the country ranks among the top 15 potato producers worldwide. Despite being the 8th largest exporter, recent data shows a decline in potato shipments to Russia, with a significant drop in both quantity and value.

To address concerns such as 'Green Potatoes' and 'Black Heart Disease', the Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC) organized a webinar. The event aimed to educate stakeholders, including exporters, growers, and researchers, on the causes, effects, and management of these potato diseases. Dr. Khalid Farooq, a Seed Potato Expert, highlighted key strategies to control Green Potatoes, such as managing light exposure and using protective coatings. For Black Heart Disease, he emphasized the importance of proper irrigation and ventilation to prevent necrotic cavities.

The webinar received positive feedback from participants, who suggested more interactive sessions to further engage stakeholders. By focusing on enhancing quality standards, Pakistan aims to strengthen its position in the global potato market and ensure sustainable exports in the future.
