The NDMA has issued flood warnings in Punjab and Sindh due to anticipated heavy rainfall, urging residents to prepare for potential flooding by creating evacuation plans and emergency kits.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has taken proactive steps to address the looming threat of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in Punjab and Sindh by activating the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC). The NDMA's monsoon report has highlighted that weather patterns originating in eastern India could impact various regions in Pakistan, necessitating the issuance of early warnings to all provinces to prepare for the anticipated weather conditions.

According to the forecast, moderate to heavy rains are expected in the upper regions of the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers starting from July 2. Additionally, a warning has been issued for possible lightning strikes in southern and central Punjab as well as Islamabad from July 5 to 7. The NDMA has alerted that the projected rainfall may result in a flood situation in the Sutlej River, with water levels anticipated to rise to 50,000 cusecs by July 5 and further escalate to 120,000 cusecs by July 10, indicating a significant flood risk.

The NDMA has assured the public of the implementation of necessary safety measures. Residents are strongly advised to stay informed, monitor weather updates closely, and adhere to evacuation directives issued by local authorities. Awareness campaigns are emphasizing the health risks associated with floods, including disease transmission from germs and the dangers of electrocution from downed power lines.

Individuals residing in flood-prone areas are urged to create evacuation plans, identify safe shelters, and prepare emergency kits. Travellers are cautioned against unnecessary journeys during severe weather conditions and potential flooding. The NDMA is actively collaborating with federal and provincial agencies to effectively manage and prepare for any potential emergency situations.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions provided by local administrative bodies to ensure their safety and well-being during this period of heightened flood risk.
