The recent meeting of the Federal Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, saw the approval of significant rules and amendments aimed at enhancing governance and transparency.

The Cabinet approved the Appellate Tribunals Inland Revenue (Conditions of Service) Rules 2024, which will regulate the appointment of members to the Appellate Tribunals responsible for resolving tax-related cases. These rules were recommended by the Ministry of Law and Justice to streamline the tribunal appointment process.

Moreover, amendments were made to the regulations governing Toshakhana gifts. Recipients of gifts such as shields and souvenirs are now required to prominently display them within their institutions or organizations, with proper record-keeping. Gifts of books must be showcased in offices or public libraries, with a catalog for easy reference. Any prohibited gifts will be disposed of by a committee designated by the Cabinet Division.

Additionally, the expert honorarium for evaluating Toshakhana gifts from the private sector has been increased, ensuring fair assessment practices. The Cabinet also ratified decisions made by the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Cases and initiated discussions on amending the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 to address evolving digital challenges.

Furthermore, the Cabinet granted tax and duty exemptions for a generous donation of 1 million bottles of Multi-Micro Nutrients by Kirk Humanitarian USA and Junaid Family Foundation USA for pregnant women. An amendment to the laws governing the Appointment of Investment Mohtasib (Ombudsman) was also approved, mandating specific qualifications for the Mohtasib position to ensure competence and expertise.

The Cabinet endorsed the decisions of the Economic Coordination Committee from May 7, demonstrating a unified approach towards economic matters. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences for the lives lost during protest incidents in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and announced plans to visit Muzaffarabad for further consultations, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing public concerns.

The recent decisions and approvals by the Federal Cabinet reflect a proactive stance towards governance, transparency, and public welfare. By implementing new rules, amendments, and exemptions, the government aims to enhance efficiency, accountability, and service delivery. These developments signify a step towards a more structured and responsive administration, catering to the needs and concerns of the citizens.
