The 54th death anniversary of renowned Urdu writer and playwright Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj was commemorated on Friday. Taj, born in Lahore on October 13, 1900, showcased his literary prowess during his student days through translations and direction of English plays. He gained popularity as the host of the daily feature 'Pakistan Hamara Hai' on Radio Pakistan and as a presenter of various radio programs.
After completing his studies in Lahore, Taj initially worked in his father's publishing house, Dar-ul-Ishaat Punjab. His notable works include translating Shakespeare's plays into Urdu, such as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' titled 'Sawan Rain Ka Sapna.' Additionally, Taj authored plays like 'Anarkali' and 'Chacha Chakkan,' which remain popular in theatrical performances. He also delved into writing short stories, novels, radio plays, and film scripts.
Tragically, Imtiaz Ali Taj met an untimely demise on April 19, 1970, when he was murdered in his sleep by unidentified assailants. Despite his tragic end, Taj's contributions to Urdu literature and theater continue to resonate with audiences even today.
