Chairman of WAPDA inspects the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project's head race tunnel in Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The project aims to address issues identified during the inspection to resume electricity generation.

The Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, located in Nauseri, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, recently underwent a thorough inspection by Chairman of WAPDA, Engr Lt Gen (r) Sajjad Ghani. The focus of the inspection was the de-watered head race tunnel, a crucial component of the project's infrastructure.

The 48-km long head race tunnel, which runs from an elevation of 1012 feet to 607 feet above sea level, has completed its de-watering process successfully. During the inspection, Chairman Ghani, along with the project team, consultants, and contractors, assessed the tunnel for any damages and discussed the progress made so far.

Recognizing the importance of addressing any faults in the tunnel, Chairman Ghani instructed the project management to create a comprehensive rehabilitation plan based on the findings of the inspection. International experts will be involved to identify the causes of the tunnel's issues and recommend necessary actions.

Due to a decrease in head race tunnel pressure, the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project temporarily halted electricity generation last month. Despite this setback, the project had already contributed over 20 billion units of clean electricity to the national grid since 2018, highlighting its significant impact on the country's energy sector.

The inspection of the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project underscores the ongoing efforts to ensure the project's efficiency and sustainability. By addressing the challenges identified during the inspection, the project aims to resume its electricity generation and continue its valuable contribution to the national grid.
