The collision took place as the express train, carrying over 300 passengers from Prague to Chop, Ukraine, crashed head-on with a freight train transporting hazardous calcium carbide.

The collision caused one of the train carriages to derail, leaving passengers disoriented. Prompt response from emergency services saw injured individuals receiving immediate medical attention, with 26 individuals being treated at the scene by paramedics.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala described the crash as a 'great disaster' and offered condolences to the victims and their families. The accident occurred just before 23:00 local time, leading to a swift emergency response to assist those affected.
